Field Marshal Friederich Paulus, commander of the German Sixth Army, depicted on the eve of surrender at Stalingrad on the 31st of January 1943.

Paulus was an ambivalent figure, who eventually became a vocal critic of the Nazi regime, joining the Soviet-sponsored National Committee for a Free Germany and acting as a witness for the prosecution during the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials.

The piece was exhibited at The Mall Galleries, London.
