Jane Austen at Work
Bronze figure cast for Winchester Cathedral’s bicentennial commemoration of Jane Austen’s passing. The work was also exhibited at the Chawton cottage where Jane wrote many of her most acclaimed novels.
A cast is currently on display at P & G Wells Bookshop, College Street, Winchester. This shop first opened in 1789 and is generally acknowledged to be the oldest book seller in England. Miss Austen is documented as having visited the premises in person; even taking tea with the proprietor on occasion.
My interpretation of Jane Austen was lauded for its emphasis on her writing rather than presenting her in the form of a conventional statue. The drapery and folds of her dress are inspired by the works of 19th-century French artists, such as David and Gérard. In this representation, she occupies a private space, absorbed in the act of creation.
Edition of nine.
Dimensions: 23cm length, 38.5cm height, 32cm depth.
